Arizona Scuba Shack has a long history in Yuma. For 40 years, and under a few other names, it's Yuma's oldest full service Dive Center.
Whether it was known as Desert Divers, Arizona Scuba, Scuba Shack and now Arizona Scuba Shack, there have been some great people running the store. Tom Kennedy, Jeff Denman, Bob Taylor, Larry Copp, Avery Zeller, Donnie Bennett, Mike Green and now under the direction and ownership of Shawn Foster, they have all been part of building it into Yuma's oldest continuously operating Dive Center.

Arizona Scuba Shack and Discover Scuba for United Way
This event actually started as a scuba diver social in 1994. We rented the pool in early summer for a private party and invited all scuba divers to come out to refresh their skills and check their equipment for any problems. The latest, most modern equipment was there for trial as well as some antique gear – still in working order. Many of the divers asked if they could bring their family and friends to try out scuba. Several people suggested I charge a nominal fee but this was never the intent. It was a free, fun day. But as a fund raiser for charity, that was an idea with merit.
The event was very popular and attendance was greater than expected. We tried to give the collected money to a well known national charity, but it was not a warm welcome. Our minds were made up to do a fund raiser but keep the money here in Yuma. United Way of Yuma County was the logical choice.
We believe the people of the community are what make it strong. When citizens pull together for the common good, the community grows and becomes stronger. We don’t pretend to understand the inner workings of the United Way, but one would have to be unconscious not to see the good it does here in Yuma. There’s no better charity to touch so many lives in such a positive way.
Shawn and I, the staff of Arizona Scuba Shack, Yuma Parks and Rec, Yuma Fire and Police, Rural Metro, and all the other volunteers that make this event work, take great pride in supporting the United Way of Yuma County. You’ll hear us talking about the scuba event all year. We’re happy to see new people trying scuba and making a donation. And it’s great that so many return each year because it’s a lot of fun and for a good cause. Jeff Denman
